GRANDPARENTING

See Again For the First Time

I saw a clip on YouTube of two British guys trying brisket and macaroni and cheese for the first time. They happened to be in our country to watch the World Cup. I don’t know what they expected, but from the look on their faces, they didn’t expect to taste something so extraordinarily good. They went crazy. It made me laugh because mac and cheese and brisket is good, but it’s not on my list for anniversary meals. The difference, of course, is that I’m not trying it for the first time.

That got me thinking about being a grandparent. Karen just held our first-ever Gigi’s Camp. We had two of our grandkids stay over for the weekend. Karen did an amazing job of filling the weekend. We had a little blow-up pool that I filled, and then I dragged our Little Tikes slide over so the kids could slide down into the pool. They loved it. They went down feet first, headfirst, sideways. We ran the hill in our yard. Their uncle hit whiffle balls for them to chase. They made and decorated (I use that term loosely) cookies. It was a weekend filled with wonder.

They were like the British guys trying brisket because everything was so new. I don’t remember tasting brisket and mac and cheese for the first time, but watching the British guys do it made me laugh out loud. Watching my grandkids enjoy Gigi’s Camp hit me the same way. Don’t miss the joy of seeing again for the first time.
